  • Air Pollution & Its Impact on Respiratory Health – By Dr. Vikas Kumar (DM, AIIMS), Pulmonologist

Every winter, Delhi transforms into one of the most polluted cities in the world. A dense layer of smog engulfs the city as air quality levels plummet, with AQI often entering the very poor to severe range. While pollution affects everyone, the most significant burden falls on our respiratory system—the gateway through which polluted air directly enters the body.

How Air Pollution Affects Our Lungs

Air pollution is a toxic mix of particulate matter (PM2.5 & PM10), nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and other harmful gases. When inhaled, these particles penetrate deep into the lungs and can enter the bloodstream.

    Short-term effects include:

Cough, throat irritation, and burning eyes

    Breathlessness and chest tightness

Exacerbations of asthma and chronic bronchitis

Increased wheezing in children and elderly

    Long-term effects include:

    Persistent asthma and COPD worsening

    Increased risk of lung infections

    Lung fibrosis in susceptible individuals

    Higher incidence of lung cancer

Reduced lung function in growing children

Patients with pre-existing lung diseases like COPD, ILD, asthma, and post-COVID lung damage are particularly vulnerable. In recent years, we have also observed young non-smokers developing respiratory diseases—pollution is a major contributor.

Children & Elderly Are the Most Affected

Children breathe faster and spend more time outdoors, increasing exposure. Pollution interferes with lung development and may lead to lifelong respiratory compromise. Older adults and individuals with heart disease are also at higher risk of complications, hospitalizations, and even mortality on high-pollution days.

What We Can Do: Practical Measures of Protection

While large-scale policy changes are crucial, there are effective steps individuals can take to reduce exposure and protect lung health.

    1. Use of Air Purifiers

HEPA filter–based purifiers significantly reduce indoor PM2.5 levels.

Place purifiers in bedrooms and living rooms where most time is spent.

Ensure regular filter replacement for effectiveness.

Air purifiers do not cure pollution, but they create a cleaner breathing environment indoors, especially for children, elderly individuals, and lung patients.

    2. Indoor Plants for Cleaner Air

Certain houseplants can mildly improve indoor air quality by absorbing toxins:

    Snake plant

    Areca palm

    Peace lily

    Money plant

While plants alone cannot combat severe pollution, they contribute to a healthier and more oxygen-rich indoor environment, especially when combined with air purifiers.

    3. Mask Usage for Outdoor Protection

A properly fitting mask can reduce inhalation of toxic particles during outdoor exposure.

Use N95 or KN95 masks when stepping outside on high-pollution days.

Cloth and surgical masks do not protect against PM2.5.

Children above 5 years and lung patients benefit significantly from clean-air masks.

    When to Seek Medical Help

Seek medical consultation if you experience:

    Persistent cough >2 weeks

    Breathlessness or wheezing

    Chest pain or tightness

Symptoms worsening with change in air quality

Early treatment reduces the risk of long-term lung damage.

  • Staying Healthy

Maintaining good health doesn’t happen by accident. It requires work, smart lifestyle choices, and the occasional checkup and test.

A healthy diet is rich in fiber, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, “good” or unsaturated fats, and omega-3 fatty acids. These dietary components turn down inflammation, which can damage tissue, joints, artery walls, and organs. Going easy on processed foods is another element of healthy eating. Sweets, foods made with highly refined grains, and sugar-sweetened beverages can cause spikes in blood sugar that can lead to early hunger. High blood sugar is linked to the development of diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and even dementia.

The Mediterranean diet meets all of the criteria for good health, and there is convincing evidence that it is effective at warding off heart attack, stroke, and premature death. The diet is rich in olive oil, fruits, vegetables, nuts and fish; low in red meats or processed meats; and includes a moderate amount of cheese and wine.

Physical activity is also necessary for good health. It can greatly reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, breast and colon cancer, depression, and falls. Physical activity improves sleep, endurance, and even sex. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise every week, such as brisk walking. Strength training, important for balance, bone health, controlling blood sugar, and mobility, is recommended 2-3 times per week.

Finding ways to reduce stress is another strategy that can help you stay healthy, given the connection between stress and a variety of disorders. There are many ways to bust stress. Try, meditation, mindfulness, yoga, playing on weekends, and taking vacations.

Finally, establish a good relationship with a primary care physician. If something happens to your health, a physician you know —and who knows you — is in the best position to help. He or she will also recommend tests to check for hidden cancer or other conditions.

  • Knee Replacement in Mumbai: Expert Care by Dr. Mayur Rabhadiya

What to Expect From Knee Replacement in Mumbai?

Knee replacement in Mumbai has evolved quickly over the last few years. Patients now expect faster recovery, smaller incisions and long-lasting results. The goal is simple: reduce pain, restore mobility and help you return to an active routine without relying on painkillers.

As an orthopedic and joint replacement surgeon practicing in Ghatkopar, I see many patients who delay surgery because of fear. The reality is different. Modern techniques like robotic and minimally invasive knee replacement make the procedure far more precise and predictable than it used to be. It allows for faster walking, quicker physiotherapy and fewer complications.

The most common candidates are people with advanced osteoarthritis, knee deformity, joint stiffness, swelling that doesn’t settle and pain that disturbs sleep or daily activity. When medicines, injections and physiotherapy stop working, knee replacement becomes a long-term solution.

The surgery replaces the damaged cartilage surface with smooth, durable implants. Robotic systems help align the joint with high accuracy, which improves implant life and functional outcome. Many patients walk the same day or next morning and return to routine work in a few weeks.

If you’re comparing options across Mumbai, focus on experience, technique, implant type and post-operative support. A detailed clinical evaluation, X-rays and sometimes alignment scans are needed to create a personalized plan that fits your lifestyle and knee condition.

    Benefits of Modern Knee Replacement

Modern knee replacement offers several advantages:
    • Smaller incision with less blood loss
    • Better implant alignment
    • Faster rehabilitation
    • Reduced postoperative pain
    • Higher long-term implant survival
    • Ability to resume daily activities sooner

    Knee Replacement Cost in Mumbai

The cost of knee replacement in Mumbai varies based on hospital category, implant system, robotic or conventional technique, and whether one or both knees are operated. Patients should prioritise surgical expertise and rehabilitation quality, as both directly impact outcomes and long-term comfort.

When Should You Consider Knee Replacement?

    You should consider evaluation when:
    • Pain persists despite medicines
    • Knee is deformed or bowed
    • Walking distance keeps decreasing
    • Sleep gets disturbed due to pain
    • Activities like climbing stairs become difficult

Best Knee Replacement Surgeon in Mumbai

Choosing the right surgeon affects your final result more than anything else. A surgeon who performs high volumes of knee replacements, uses advanced techniques and provides structured follow-up care usually delivers better outcomes.

Dr. Mayur Rabhadiya has extensive experience in robotic knee replacement, minimally invasive knee surgery and complex joint reconstruction. He has treated over 3,00,000 patients and performed more than 2,000 joint replacements across Mumbai.

    Is knee replacement safe?

Yes. With modern anesthesia, minimally invasive techniques and better implants, knee replacement is considered a safe and predictable surgery.

    How long does recovery take?

Most patients start walking the same day or next morning. Daily activities return in 2–3 weeks. Full recovery takes around 6–12 weeks.

    Is robotic knee replacement better?

Robotic assistance improves accuracy of bone cuts and alignment. This often leads to smoother movement and longer implant survival.

How long does a knee implant last?

High-quality implants can last 20–25 years depending on activity level, weight and overall health.
